These photographs are from a visit to the Oventik Zapatista community in the mountains of Chiapas in the southern state of Mexico in 2010. The Zapatista rebels are fighting for the ideals of Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata; "Tierra y Libertad" (land and liberty) agrarian reform, equality for all, and for the rights of the suppressed indigenous communities. After being driven out of the towns and cities by the military after an uprising in 1994, the Zapatistas have been living in a state of rebellion in autonomous communities ever since. Living in the sentiments of Zapata; 'It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees'
